Whisky Live Festival - a review

Last Thursday I attended the Whisky Live Festival in Cape Town with a good friend BB from Compleat Golfer. Our aim - taste single malt whisky that we wouldn’t ordinarily have the every day budget to buy. There was one hitch though - the better the whisky, the more coupons you had to handover - but this problem was [...]

Barack Obama

Today is a momentous day in history - Barack Obama has won the 2008 US Presidential Election. It’s a true privilege to live through this occasion and perhaps only in time will we truly understand the enormity of what he has achieved. Greatness only comes around every once in a while and when it does, it’s awe inspiring. He is the head of [...]

SA wine prices at record lows

Hard to believe but true : SA wine prices at record lows Now for you and me that may seem like a ridiculous statement - because more often than not we’re forking out more and more for a good bottle of vino. But beneath the surface it’s true - taking into account production costs, the current over supply [...]

Pendock lifts the lid on some dodgy wine dealings.

Never shy of controversy or stirring the pot, Neil Pendock is at it again with his latest article in the Sunday Times and his latest blog post. Read them here: Sample Scandal: great minds think alike or tip-off? Wine Wars Read them and make your own mind up - I must say though, I love it when the pot [...]

The ‘Big’ Burnt Rubber Debate

I have just watched a highlights package of the “big” Burnt Rubber Wine Debate organised by Richard Kelley MW (of importer Richards Walford) in the UK and attended by a host of UK Wine journo’s (notably Jane MacQuitty) and some of the best winemakers from South Africa (including cult figure Eben Sadie). I can confidently confirm [...]

An exceptional red at a really down to earth price.

With the price of things increasing on a daily basis, it really is hard to find an exceptional wine at a good price these days (somewhere under R100). So when you do come across one it’s worth taking note of  - especially if that wine happens to be a boutique wine at a good price. Rusticus Tilled Earth [...]

Is fine wine a good investment?

I’ve recently entered the foray of investing - dabbling in shares of this and that - and what a hell of a time to be starting out, it’s a blood bath out there! Anyway, despite all the market turmoil, it’s a good time to learn because the lessons you get taught are severe indeed - it’s like visiting [...]

WOSA’s invitation to the number one wine blogger in the world pays off - for Eben Sadie.

WOSA invited Alder Yarrow of Vinography to attend Cape Wine 2008 and it seems to have paid off - for some and none more so than Eben Sadie. Vinography has been flooded with coverage of South African wine (much needed too) and the verdict on the overall quality output of our wine ranges from great to poor with no middle ground. I think the most [...]

Dombeya Chardonnay 2006

I cracked this bottle of vino open the other evening to enjoy with a bowl of chicken pesto pasta - which has become a stock standard dish of mine. Had no expectation for this and was pleasantly surprised - it’s one of the nicest chardonnays I’ve had in a while. Dombeya Chardonnay 2006 Fresh, lively nose with a hint of buttered [...]

Alder Yarrow - the man behind Vinography

On Wednesday afternoon I was privileged enough to have a glass of wine with the world’s number one wine blogger - Alder Yarrow of Vinograpy. He has been out in South Africa attending Cape Wine 2008 and was invited here by WOSA  - who I must commend for having the foresight to do so. Alder’s word is well respected [...]

A flippen funny wine related video

Fox 5 Atlanta reporter Melissa Sander takes a massive, gruesomely audible faceplant while stomping grapes during a live segment. One of Howard Stern’s most memorable sound effects is born. Highlight: 0:55-:57 is the reason YouTube’s pause button exists.

Our president, a dessert wine and the Ryder Cup

This past weekend was an exciting and eventful one indeed. Thabo Mbeki stepped down as the president of South Africa, the USA won the Ryder Cup and I purchased a legendary dessert wine. I’ll leave you to decide which of the above is more important but here are a few words on each from moi’: Thabo Mbeki Resigns He has served this [...]

The Cru has a new logo!

As you can see - The Cru has a new logo and header. The old one was great but I just felt like a fun change and something a little less formal. This is by no means the finished product and I can already see it may need some tweaking - so let me know what you [...]

One of the best critiques of wine I have ever read!

And possibly the funniest - it is penned by Tart D’Vin @ Pinot Pile : Anyway, the wine is in a moerse heavy bottle with fancy corks and stuff, so probably that is why it are so expensive, but I sips and it is very lekker. It were the 2004 Vergelegen V, and with all those “V’s” [...]
