Quality White Wine Ages Better Than Red

Having recently come into possession of some Château d'Yquem, this one caught my eye. Eric Asimov (thepour.blogs.nytimes.com) writes:

Photo: A red Vigne de l’Enfant Jesus (1856) and a white Mersault Charmes (1846). The two bottles are produced by Bouchard Pere et Fils, located at 15 rue du Chateau, Beaune, France. (Ed Alcock for The New York Times)

It amazes me that I still hear from people who doubt that white wines can age. Actually, it’s not so much that they doubt it. It simply doesn’t occur to them.

To a certain extent they are right. The vast majority of wines, white or red, are intended for drinking within a few years of their release. But the popular image of age-worthy wines is almost always of reds, particularly of red Bordeaux.

They might be surprised to learn that the wines that age best are more likely than not white wines.

Quite true. In fact, the other day I sat and had a '95 Santi Sauvignon Bianco "Le Speranze" that had been kept under terrible conditions and it was seriously classy. I wonder when the local market will wise up to the potential of making longterm whites?..
