Canard Duchêne Brut: From a small, lesser-known champagne house, it comes with a fine mousse, intense fruit aromas and a pleasant base note of yeastiness. Find it at around R220 per bottle from Wine Concepts in Cape Town, Norman Goodfellow's in Johannesburg or direct from Melgab at www.melgab.co.za

Canard-Duchêne Brut, R220, is a blend of Pinot Noir (35-40%), Pinot Meunier (35-40%) and Chardonnay (22-25%)/ Palate: fruity notes, mingled with the fragrance of fresh brioche - a sign of maturity. Best paired with raw oysters, but hold the vinegar as it alters the flavour of the Champagne.

1 NV Champagne Canard-Duchêne Champagne Brut (R323.50, Wine Concepts) If you're going to indulge, you may as well do it over Christmas and order in some real French champagne. This bubbly reflects the friendly, accessible style of the champagne house. It's made from Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay and has the intense fresh fruit on the palate with the fragrance of fresh brioche.
