Vernaccia Di San Gimignano DOCG

Vernaccia Di San Gimignano DOCG

Description: Dry White

Vintages Available: 2006

Country: Italy

Region: Tuscany

Producer: Conti Serristori

Grapes: 100% Vernaccia di San Gimignano

Vernaccia di San Gimignano, quite different from the Sardinian Vernaccia, is a very ancient grape; its name derives, possibly, from the Latin vernaculus meaning “on the spot, local, while some ampelographers believe it originates from Vernazza, in Liguria. The wine made from it has always been highly praised by eminent connoisseurs: Ludovico The Moor, the Popes Paolo III Farnese and Martino IV. In particular, Pope Martino, discerning gourmet, wanted the eels of Lake Bolsena to be marinaded in vernaccia before they were grilled; it is for this reason that Dante Alighieri puts him in Purgatory, among the greedy ones “ to purge, through fasting, the eels and the vernaccia.

This white wine, of exceptional quality, was the first Italian wine to obtain the DOC, and is today a DOCG.

Pale gold colour, with green tints; fragrant bouquet of broom blossom with hints of ripe pineapple and flintstone; dry, full and savoury, clean and balanced flavour with an elegant, pleasantly lingering aftertaste of vine peaches and almonds.
