Sociedade Agrícola Boas Quintas was founded in 1991, when a group of oenologists, viticulturists and businessmen, decided to pool their collective vast experience in the wine trade and produce single estate? wines in the noble and historic Portuguese region? of the Dão. The philosophy that inspired the creation of the company was based on the production of wines of the highest quality, but with distinctive Portuguese character. Sociedade Agrícola Boas Quintas has its headquarters in the town of Mortágua, where the small winery? lies beside the magnificent family home of the Cancela de Abreus, beneath which are the cool and dimly lit ageing cellars.
Touriga Nacional 100%
A total of 10 hectares? is divided between three plots, two in Mortágua and one in Nelas. The granite soil is slightly acidic, low in nutrients and well-drained. Situated at an altitude of approximately 200 metres and protected from the coastal winds by the mountains of Buçaco and Caramulo, the area is cold and damp in winter, with frequent spring frosts; summer brings hot dry? weather. The autumn rains often arrive in the middle of the harvest, and it is not unusual to produce two very distinct wines: before and after the rains.
Whole grapes are carefully transported to the winery? in 25 kg boxes, destalked and pumped to the fermentation? tanks. Fermentation begins after two days of skin contact?; then follows a long fermentation with gentle maceration?, in order to extract? the maximum potential from this magnificent grape variety?. Further extraction continues after fermentation with two to three weeks of "cuvaison?".
